Columbia College South Carolina online is a private liberal arts women’s college in Columbia, South Carolina. It provides students with academically challenging programs, intellectual and professional competencies and experiential learning. The college is recognized by US News and World Report as a best value institution. The institution also offers evening, graduate and online programs that serve both men and women. It is founded 160 years ago by the United Methodist Church as a women’s liberal arts college. It is one of the oldest women’s colleges in the United States because it is founded in 1854. Columbia Female College officially opened in 1859 with an initial student body of 121 and faculty of 16. The school however had to close, when in 1865 General Sherman and his troops marched through Columbia. It was saved from being torched only because Professor of Music Orchard left his home to stand in the doorway of the college where he could be seen by the troops, having heard that all unoccupied buildings would be burned by a certain hour. In 1873 the institution was reopened. It was damaged by its first fire twenty-two years later, though the damage was not extensive.

Columbia College South Carolina received its today’s name in 1905. Then it was moved to its present site in North Columbia one year earlier. The college operated out of its former Plain Street facilities until the North Columbia campus could be reoccupied in 1910, swept by a second fire in 1909. Presidents Guids and Greene oversaw Columbia College as well as Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina from 1940 to 1951. A tragic third fire ravaged the campus in 1964, destroyed Old Main, which was a college landmark. Athletic teams of the college, nicknamed athletically as the Fighting Koalas are part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, primarily competing in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Sports for women include golf, soccer, basketball and even more – for example tennis, cross country, volleyball and swimming. Today the college accepts many students each year.
