Continuing education online courses

There are different types of continuing education online courses. For example courses for professionals are offered in numerous colleges and universities. These courses are a specific learning activity, characterized by the issuance of a certificate or continuing education units for the purpose of documenting attendance at a designated seminar or course of instruction. In a number of fields – for example teaching – licensing bodies impose continuing education requirements of members who hold licenses to practice within a particular profession. All the requirements are intended to encourage professionals to expand their foundations of knowledge and stay up-to-date on new developments. Requirements may be satisfied through university or college coursework, conferences and seminar attendance or extension courses depending on the field. The most widely accepted standard developed by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training is that 10 contact hours equals one Continuing Education unit although individual professions may have different standards. Not all professionals, however, use the CEU convention. The American Psychological Association for example accredits sponsors of continuing education and uses simply a CE approach. This kind of education offers different methods including traditional types of classroom lectures and laboratories. Many of the programs, however, make heavy use of distance learning which not only includes independent study. Furthermore it can include videotaped material, online education or broadcast programming which has more recently dominated the distance learning community. Many of the colleges and universities have begun to offer hybrid continuing education online courses. They offer adult learners the option of having in-classroom and online learning. Courses online have brought the possibility of obtaining an affordable college education to many of those of to whom it was previously out of reach. The use of conference-type group study may be used for a particular continuing education program or course.
